Design Goals
Design a unique form
Create a form that can fit into your hands in two different ways.
Inspiration
Ideation
One of the biggest challenges was designing a natural grip that didn’t fight against the object's fluid shape. I wanted to find a way to hold the model that felt intentional, ensuring the hand complemented the form rather than obscuring it.
Form follows feel: I reversed the typical design process by modeling before sketching, ensuring the ergonomics weren't just an afterthought, but the foundation of the design's silhouette.
Initial Process
After finalizing the clay study, I sectioned the form and moved the profiles directly onto the lumber. By alternating the grain orientation for each segment, I created a continuous visual rhythm that flows through the entire piece.
Process
The refinement stage involved extensive hand-filing and sanding to resolve the transitions between sections. This allowed me to achieve a seamless, continuous surface while strictly adhering to the proportions established in the original clay study.
